Special series for Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) – launched in 2015 as a one-off fund-raising project for Malaysia’s first teacher training college-turned-university. UPSI (in Tanjung Malim) offered UPSI 1-9999 to alumni (many of whom are educators nationwide) and the public. Proceeds went towards the university’s endowment and scholarship funds, directly benefiting educational research and student welfare. The bidding saw emotional buys: retired teachers fought for numbers like UPSI 1922 (the year of Sultan Idris Training College’s founding) and UPSI 2008 (year it became a full university). UPSI 1 was reportedly retained for a royal patron or the Education Ministry. By 2016, UPSI announced a successful uptake and funneled the raised money into building a new library wing. Now, UPSI plates are spotted on vehicles of teachers and academics – a teacher might proudly drive a car with a UPSI plate to school, symbolizing their roots. With 9999 numbers, it had reasonable availability, but as with other uni series, once it ended, no more were made. The UPSI series highlights the pride of educators and stands as a tribute to a century-old institution’s journey into modernity, all via a humble license plate.
