What is JPJ eBid
JPJ eBid is the official online platform by Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan (JPJ) for Malaysians to participate in auctions for new releases of number plates. Number plates in Malaysia are governed and issued by JPJ alone, and their first channel of distribution is through JPJ eBid. JPJ eBid was proposed and launched to simplify the bidding process for special and attractive vehicle registration numbers, ensuring fairness, transparency, and nationwide access to everyone without barrier.

Main sections of JPJ eBid
When you log in, you'll find several sections for you to access:
- "New Number" Series: Numbers currently open for bidding.
- "Coming Soon" Series: Upcoming number plate series.
- "Bidding History": Your past bidding activities and outcomes.
- "My Account": Your personal and payment details.
These sections all serve a purpose to all bidders. So keep that in mind and understand their purposes for a smooth experience.
The "New Number" Series refers to all the number plates that are currently in an active bidding process, with live bidding offers being put up until their closing date is reached.
You may think there are thousands of people bidding with you, but the truth is, not all the number plates have many, if not any bidders. So it's not all that scary.
There is no limit on how many bidders there can be per plate. So, the more sought after a number plate is, the more bidders with thicker wallets there will be. So, choose a plate carefully. It's a game of luck too, sometimes there could just be 1-3 passive bidders but sometimes, there may be 20 highly motivated bidders for a single number plate.
The "Coming Soon" Series refers to all the upcoming number plates that will start bidding in a later date, nobody can participate and put up offers until the bidding time starts.
JPJ releases new number plate series regularly, and each series has a limited bidding window (usually about five days). Staying updated about new series releases ensures you won't miss out on bidding for a special/lucrative number plate.

Participating in an Auction
Bidding for a number plate on JPJ eBid is straight forward, there are no approvals needed from JPJ to partake in an auction. Everyone can freely bid for a number plate on JPJ eBid with no restrictions or problems.
To get started, pick a suitable number plate series of your liking. Remember, lucrative number plate series and highly sought after numbers often see tougher competition with higher bids. So choose your battle wisely.
Set a Personal Budget
We genuinely recommend setting a firm budget that you will follow, some auctions may experience competitive bidding wars due to irrational FOMO or a persistant bidder. Before you bid, do a personal review of your own budget for a plate to avoid overspending and emotional bidding.
Start Bidding
After choosing your preferred plate of choice, you'd need to place a one-time 10 ringgit deposit fee to start partaking in the auction. Think of it as your entry ticket to the bidding room, it is non-refundable indefinitely.
With the deposit fee placed, you can now observe the current bids placed for that plate. The top three highest bidding offers will be displayed for everyone to notice.
However, in universally all auctions and on JPJ eBid, the last 30-60 minutes is when the actual bidding time is taken seriously by participants. Putting up your bids early on can risk detection to other participants, it will make participants reconsider if this number plate is more valuable than they'd initially expect. And as such, they will be allocating a higher budget to try and win that number plate over. This is the psychology behind auctions, especially on JPJ eBid.
The way to forecast if a number plate has high demand is to see how many offers there are and the time left for the auction to conclude. If early on during the auction, there are considerable offers having been put up, consider the auction to experience high volume of offers during the last few minutes of the auction.
We wouldn't recommend placing your bids early into the auction on JPJ eBid, that might invite other bidders to outbid you. Naturally, try to not invite in competition. Monitor bids closely and strike strategically in the final moments.
Place your bid(s) when the closing time is near, think a few hours before the closing time or 30-60 minutes before to the closing time. It largely depends on how highly sought after the number plate is. While it's adviced to place your bids in the final moments of the auction, JPJ eBid may crash or unable to key in your bid due to heavy traffic on the platform. The last few minutes can be very chaotic and laggy.
Ending the Auction
After the closing time is reached for the auction, no more offers can be put up and the auction concluded nationwide. JPJ will announce and confirm with bidders of their auction result after a few hours the auction concludes.
If you're successful, JPJ will confirm with you of your successful bid(s) via email and in-app notifcation. Before you celebrate on your win (rightfully so!), you've simply just won the rights to that number plate. You still have to proceed forward with the actual registration process with JPJ. Make sure to save your receipt to move forward with the plate registration.
Reserving & Registering Your Plate
If you just bought a vehicle, inform your designated dealership Sales Advisor to proceed forward with your vehicle's registration with your winning number plate. They will start the process of registering it and manufacturing the physical number plate for your car.
If you bought the number plate out of personal desire, without a vehicle to register it on, JPJ grants you a grade period of 12 months to settle your number plate registration onto a vehicle. Failure to meet this requirement before the 12 month grace period will result in the forfeit of the number plate and you will lose your rights, and ownership, of that number plate without any closure or any refund whatsoever.
In the case where you don't have 40,000 ringgit under your sofa to park your number plate, consider registering the number plate on any motorbike or reintroducing the number plate to the secondary market for a price on Platehaus, Malaysia's leading platform & ecosystem for the number plate market.
