JPJ Latest Running Numbers

A JPJ running number (Malay: "Nombor Semasa" or sometimes "Nombor Biasa") is a standard registration number in the current series that has not been classified as a Golden, Premium, Attractive or Popular number.

JPJ officially groups "special" numbers into categories like Golden (single/very low digits), Attractive (repeating/sequential digits), and Popular numbers (easy or commonly requested combinations). Everything outside those categories is treated as an ordinary or "running" number.

Key points:

• Running numbers are simply normal numbers in the current active series (e.g. VLY 4521, BRR 5634) that haven't been pulled out as "1", "8", "8888", etc.
• Depending on the series, you can:
  • Reserve/buy them directly via JPJ counters or the MySIKAP portal at fixed fees; or
  • Bid on them when they are offered as "Regular / Nombor Biasa" via JPJeBid, where the minimum bid typically starts at RM300.
• If no one bids on a normal running number in JPJeBid, it usually just goes back into the pool as a standard number that can be bought/registered like any other "nombor semasa".

In practice, almost anyone who can legally register a vehicle in Malaysia can reserve or buy a running number:

• Individuals (Malaysian & non-Malaysian)
• Businesses / companies registered with SSM

JPJ's official guide states that registration number reservations can be made at any State JPJ office, not only in your state of residence.

Once a number has been reserved or successfully won (for example via JPJeBid):

• It can be registered at any JPJ office or branch in Malaysia, except UTC counters, which don't handle some of these processes.
• Exception – duty-free island series (Pulau Bebas Cukai): Numbers specifically allocated to areas like Langkawi (KV) and Labuan (L) must be registered at the JPJ branch that handles those free-trade areas, as stated in the JPJeBid FAQ.

Because of these special rules, many private platforms do not offer Langkawi/Labuan running numbers and focus only on standard mainland / Sabah / Sarawak series.

The validity period depends on how you obtained the number:

1. Reservation / "Secara Pilihan" via JPJ or MySIKAP (normal running number)
   • You typically have 6 months from the approval date to register the number to a vehicle.
   • There's also a short payment window (e.g. 14 days to complete payment after approval) depending on the type of application.
2. Tender / Auction (JPJeBid or formal "Tawaran") – including Regular / Running numbers offered in the system
   • JPJ's official JPJeBid terms state that the validity period is 12 months from the date on the Letter of Successful Bid.

If you fail to register the number within the validity period:

• JPJ will cancel/withdraw the reservation or winning number.
• Any amount you paid will not be refunded and is treated as government revenue, which is explicitly mentioned in both official JPJeBid conditions and summarised again in media coverage.

So the simplified rule of thumb:

• Normal reservation (running number) → 6 months to register
• Tender/auction (including "Regular" via JPJeBid) → 12 months to register

A JPJ running number is a standard vehicle registration mark, so it can be used on almost all normal motor vehicles in Malaysia, for example:

• Passenger cars (new, used, or recond)
• Motorcycles / scooters
• Vans, MPVs, SUVs, pick-ups
• Commercial vehicles such as lorries, trucks, etc.

Malaysian law requires registration plates to be displayed on all motor vehicles, and JPJ issues these numbers centrally for that purpose.

Once you own a number, it can even be transferred from one vehicle to another that you own, using JPJ's "Vehicle Registration Number Transfer" procedure (subject to standard requirements like PUSPAKOM checks, same owner, etc.).

Special categories like diplomatic plates, trade plates, or government plates use different formats, so normal running numbers are meant for regular private/company vehicles.

The documents you need are basically the same as JPJ's own requirements for number reservation and JPJeBid registration:

For individuals (Malaysian citizens / PR):

• Clear copy of MyKad / MyPR (front and back)

For individuals (foreigners):

• Clear copy of passport (bio-data page, and sometimes visa page if applicable)

For companies / businesses:

• SSM company documents (e.g. Section 17/58 or equivalent proving registration)
• Copy of authorised signatory's IC/passport
• Company stamp (if required by the form)

If you're using JPJeBid or MySIKAP directly:

You must first register in the system at any JPJ office (not UTC) with your IC/passport or company documents. Once JPJ has created your record in MySIKAP, you can log in and bid or reserve numbers online.

If you use our platform as your agent, we'll request the same docs so we can legally submit reservations and registrations on your behalf.

You have a few good, official ways to track new series and latest running numbers:

1. JPJ Official Website – "Semakan Nombor Pendaftaran Terkini"
   • Go to the JPJ website and use the "check current registration number" section.
   • Choose your state (e.g. WP Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Johor).
   • The system will display the latest running number for that state/series.
2. JPJ Social Media (FB, IG, etc.)
   • JPJ frequently posts about new series launches (e.g. new prefixes, commemorative series, free-trade island series, etc.) and special announcements.
3. Our platform's updates
   • Follow our Facebook / Instagram / WhatsApp broadcast and email alerts.
   • We monitor JPJ, JPJeBid and MySIKAP announcements daily and publish:
     • New series openings
     • Latest running numbers by state
     • Bidding schedules for popular special series

That way, you don't have to keep manually checking multiple places for every new prefix.

You cannot legally "lock" a future number before JPJ opens that series in its system, but you can prepare so your reservation goes in the moment it becomes available.

Typical pre-booking flow with us:

1. Tell us your preferred state, prefix and number
   • Example: Kuala Lumpur – VME 4567 or Selangor – BRR 9092.
   • We'll advise if your choice is obviously "special" and likely to be diverted into Golden/Premium/Attractive/Popular categories rather than standard running.
2. Submit your documents and payment in advance
   • You provide IC/passport/SSM docs and we verify them against JPJ/MySIKAP requirements.
3. We monitor the series opening
   • As soon as JPJ opens that prefix as nombor semasa in their system (via JPJ counter or MySIKAP), we immediately:
     • Place a reservation request (for normal running numbers); or
     • Join JPJeBid if the number is only available by bidding (e.g. because it's classified as Regular in the auction).
4. If successful
   • We send you proof of reservation / successful bidding result and guide you on registering the number to your vehicle within the allowed 6- or 12-month window (depending on reservation vs tender).
5. If not successful
   • Our policy is to refund your payment for that pre-book attempt (both our service fee and the JPJ fee/bid amount where applicable), so you're not penalised if someone else secures the number first or JPJ reclassifies it.

Because most "ordinary" running numbers are not highly contested, your chances are generally very good if we submit at the moment the series opens. The main intense competition is for Golden/Premium/Attractive/Popular numbers, not for typical running numbers.

For normal running numbers, once JPJ moves on to the next prefix (for example, from VLY to VLZ), you generally cannot request a brand-new "nombor semasa" from that old series. However, there are a few important nuances:

1. "Nombor baki" and "nombor tamat tempoh"
   • JPJ's own guide mentions that you can sometimes apply for numbers under:
     • Kategori semasa (running)
     • Nombor baki (leftover numbers)
     • Nombor tamat tempoh yang boleh dibuat tempahan (expired but re-releasable numbers)
   • This means some unsold/unused numbers from older series may occasionally still be available through JPJ's reservation system, depending on state and internal policy.
2. Buying from an existing owner (plate transfer)
   • If someone already owns a plate from a past series (e.g. WXX 1234), they can sell it to you and transfer the registration number onto your vehicle using JPJ's official number transfer procedure.
3. Ready-stock plates from dealers/agents
   • Many plate dealers and marketplaces buy attractive numbers from older series in bulk and keep them as ready stock.
   • You can then buy these plates directly from such dealers and do a normal JPJ transfer/registration.

So:

• You cannot request a fresh "running number" from a closed series as if that series were still current.
• But you can still obtain past-series plates via:
  • JPJ's leftover/"baki" inventory (if available), or
  • Purchase/transfer from existing owners or dealers who hold those numbers.
