Series Overview

1D is the old Sarawak First Division registration format.

Before Sarawak adopted the modern Q-front system in 1991, its older plates followed administrative divisions rather than the familiar Peninsular state-prefix style. The number before D identified the division, so 1D pointed to the First Division, broadly associated with present-day Kuching and Samarahan history.

The format was broader than a single 1D 1 to 1D 9999 run. Plate-history references describe the old Sarawak structure as a division marker followed by alphabet sequencing and a registration number. A surviving example such as 1DD 2660 shows how the extra letter formed part of the sequence rather than acting as decoration.

That makes 1D important as Sarawak plate architecture. It records the pre-Q period, the older divisional map and the later transition through suffix-Q correction before Q moved to the front of Sarawak registrations.

1D has collector interest because it looks unusually short and modern while actually being old administrative infrastructure. Its appeal comes from Kuching-area history, pre-1991 formatting and the survival of a registration style that no longer defines new Sarawak plates.
