Series Overview

1D is the old registration code for Sarawak's First Division, centred on Kuching and Samarahan. Sarawak's early system numbered its administrative divisions, so the plate began with the division number followed by D, then a sequence letter and number, as in 1DD 2660.

Sources disagree on how long the D codes lasted for the original five divisions. Europlate records Kuching plates using the single letter K by 1965, while Wikipedia describes the D codes giving way to single letters (K for Kuching) only as they were exhausted. Either way, the whole system ended in 1991, when Sarawak moved to the Q-front format that gave Kuching QK and later QA.
