Series Overview
2D is the old Sarawak Second Division registration format.
In Sarawak's pre-1991 system, the number before D marked the administrative division. 2D referred to the Second Division, historically associated with Simanggang and later read through Sri Aman and Betong history.
The format is easy to misread today because it looks almost custom-made: a digit, the letter D, then further letters and numbers. Its origin was administrative, not decorative. The old structure used a division marker, alphabet sequencing and a registration number, so the 1 to 9999 number span could repeat across sequence letters.
That makes 2D a format family rather than a one-block special release. It belongs to the same old Sarawak world as 1D, 3D, 4D, 5D, 6D and 7D, before the state moved into the modern Q-front system.
2D has regional-history appeal. It is interesting because surviving examples carry an older Sarawak geography and a plate structure that vanished from new registrations after the Q standardisation period.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 2D a JPJ special number plate series or an old legacy format?

Why do 2D plates look special or unusual today?
2D plates look unusual because they do not follow the modern state-series shape most Malaysians now recognise. Legacy format (historic Sarawak divisional registration). Their appeal usually comes from age, regional history, unusual formatting and surviving documentation rather than from a public auction campaign.
How many 2D plates were issued, and what was the original format?
