Series Overview

6D is the old Sarawak Sixth Division plate format, most closely associated with Sarikei.

Sarikei was formed out of the older Third Division in the 1970s and was assigned the 6D prefix as the Sixth Division. That makes 6D part of Sarawak's administrative geography rather than a commemorative or vanity release.

The format lasted longer than many older divisional codes. Public plate-history references note that 6D and 7D continued into the 1991 transition period, even after some earlier 1D to 5D-style prefixes had been exhausted or replaced.

The structure was broader than a single 6D 1 to 6D 9999 block. It used alphabet sequencing, and late examples can carry suffix Q after the number. A widely reproduced example is 6DA 124 Q, while current marketplace references have surfaced examples such as 6DA 23 Q and 6DA 116 Q.

That suffix Q belongs to the larger Sarawak standardisation story. Older B, K, L, M, S, 6D and 7D-style registrations could overlap with formats elsewhere, so Q was used as a Sarawak identifier at the end before the 1991 reform moved Q to the front.

6D is interesting because it looks special while actually being old regional infrastructure: Sarikei identity, divisional history, late suffix-Q usage and the visible bridge into the modern QR Sarikei family.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 6D a JPJ special number plate series or an old legacy format?

6D is the old Sarawak Sixth Division plate format, most closely associated with Sarikei. It is best understood as historic sarawak sixth division / sarikei legacy format, not as a modern JPJeBid or commemorative special-series release.

Where does the 6D legacy plate format come from?

6D is the old Sarawak Sixth Division plate format, most closely associated with Sarikei. Sarikei was formed out of the older Third Division in the 1970s and was assigned the 6D prefix as the Sixth Division. That makes 6D part of Sarawak's administrative geography rather than a commemorative or vanity release.

Why do 6D plates look special or unusual today?

6D plates look unusual because they do not follow the modern state-series shape most Malaysians now recognise. Legacy format (Sarikei / Sixth Division, used into 1991). Their appeal usually comes from age, regional history, unusual formatting and surviving documentation rather than from a public auction campaign.

How many 6D plates were issued, and what was the original format?

6D is best described as 6D + letters + number + optional Q suffix. For old formats, the displayed market plate may include sequence letters or suffixes, so the exact JPJ-registered form should always be checked.

What should buyers verify before buying or transferring a 6D plate?

Legacy format; retained-number use depends on current JPJ eligibility.
