Series Overview

7D is the old Sarawak Seventh Division plate format, associated with Kapit.

Its shape is part of the attraction. A digit followed by D can look like a modern specialty plate, but 7D comes from Sarawak's older administrative map. Kapit became the Seventh Division after being split from the former Third Division, and the registration code followed that divisional identity.

That places 7D outside the modern QP Kapit family and outside the standard Q-front Sarawak system used from 1991 onward. Public plate-history references describe 6D and 7D as late survivors of the divisional format, continuing into the transition period before Sarawak moved fully to the newer Q structure.

The format also explains why some examples appear with extra letters and a Q at the end. Old Sarawak plates used sequence letters and registration numbers; late pre-1991 records could carry suffix Q as the Sarawak identifier before Q moved to the front of modern Sarawak registrations.

7D is therefore best understood as Kapit history in registration form. Its appeal comes from age, geography and an unusual digit-letter structure rather than from a JPJeBid launch or a vanity campaign.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 7D a JPJ special number plate series or an old legacy format?

7D is the old Sarawak Seventh Division plate format, associated with Kapit. It is best understood as historic sarawak seventh division / kapit legacy format, not as a modern JPJeBid or commemorative special-series release.

Where does the 7D legacy plate format come from?

7D is the old Sarawak Seventh Division plate format, associated with Kapit. Its shape is part of the attraction. A digit followed by D can look like a modern specialty plate, but 7D comes from Sarawak's older administrative map. Kapit became the Seventh Division after being split from the former Third Division, and the registration code followed that divisional identity.

Why do 7D plates look special or unusual today?

7D plates look unusual because they do not follow the modern state-series shape most Malaysians now recognise. Legacy format (Kapit / Seventh Division, used into 1991). Their appeal usually comes from age, regional history, unusual formatting and surviving documentation rather than from a public auction campaign.

How many 7D plates were issued, and what was the original format?

7D is best described as 7D + letters + number + optional Q suffix. For old formats, the displayed market plate may include sequence letters or suffixes, so the exact JPJ-registered form should always be checked.

What should buyers verify before buying or transferring a 7D plate?

Legacy format; retained-number use depends on current JPJ eligibility.
