Series Overview

ED is the early Malaysia-era Sabah registration code associated with Lahad Datu.

After Sabah joined Malaysia in 1963, the older North Borneo district letters were carried forward with E placed in front. In this case, D continued the Lahad Datu association from the older district-code system.

That makes ED easy to misread today. It is not an electric-vehicle plate and not a private special series. It is a historical Sabah district format from the bridge between North Borneo-era plates and the later S-front Sabah structure.

ED belongs with the other early Sabah E-prefix codes such as EB for Beaufort, EJ for Jesselton, EK for Kudat, ES for Sandakan, ET for Tawau and EU for Keningau. Together, they preserve the old district map inside the first Malaysia-era registration arrangement.

The format identifies the historical system more than a precise year for every individual vehicle. Its value is Lahad Datu provenance, East Coast Sabah history and the survival of a short transitional code.
