Series Overview

EJ is the early Malaysia-era Sabah registration code associated with Jesselton, the former name of Kota Kinabalu.

When Sabah moved from older North Borneo district marks into the early Malaysia-era format, E was placed before the district letter. EJ therefore preserved the Jesselton identity before the later S-front Sabah system became familiar.

The Jesselton link makes EJ one of the strongest Sabah legacy entries. Kota Kinabalu's old name did not vanish from plate history; the J association remained visible in this transitional format and helps explain why some old West Coast Sabah registrations look unusual today.

Europlate collector notes add useful colour by citing Jesselton examples such as EJ 2053 and EJ 1126. They also explain that E helped stop a Jesselton J registration being confused with Johor, and that suffix-letter forms such as EJ A and EJ B could appear after the plain EJ block was exhausted.

EJ is valuable as a historical identifier: Jesselton name history, colonial-to-federation transition and the visible movement from single district letters into the East Malaysia format.
