Series Overview

EK is the Sabah registration code for Kudat, formed by adding Sabah's E prefix to Kudat's town letter, K. K was also Kedah's letter, so after 1963 existing Kudat plates gained an S suffix (as in K 314 S) and new registrations took the E prefix.

From the early 1980s Sabah switched to its current S-front format, with SK for Kudat.

Why did Kudat need an E?

Its old letter K was also Kedah's. After 1963, existing Kudat plates took an S suffix and new ones the E prefix, keeping the codes apart.
