Series Overview

EK is the early Malaysia-era Sabah registration code associated with Kudat.

The format comes from the period when Sabah placed E before the old district letter. K had already identified Kudat in the North Borneo-style district system, and EK preserved that identity in the transitional post-1963 arrangement.

Seen without context, EK can look like a modern two-letter vanity prefix. Its real meaning is older and more geographic: Kudat identity carried across an administrative format change.

That makes EK part of Sabah's handover from North Borneo district lettering into the Malaysia-era system. The E did not erase the older district map; it sat in front of it, making codes such as EK readable as both new Malaysian administration and older local geography.

EK belongs with Sabah's other early E-prefix district codes. EB points to Beaufort, ED to Lahad Datu, EJ to Jesselton, ES to Sandakan, ET to Tawau and EU to Keningau. EK completes the Kudat side of that map.

The prefix identifies the historical system more than the exact year of an individual vehicle. Its appeal comes from old Sabah geography, a compact two-letter shape and the survival of a district code from the North Borneo-to-Malaysia transition.

Kudat gives the plate a northern Sabah identity, which is different in feel from the larger and more familiar Sandakan, Tawau or Kota Kinabalu-linked codes.
