EL

Series Overview

EL is the Labuan-linked East Malaysia legacy format from the period after Labuan was part of North Borneo/Sabah and before it became a Federal Territory in 1984.

The letter L had been associated with Labuan since the Straits Settlements period. In Sabah's post-1963 format, E was added before the older district letter, producing EL for Labuan.

That gives EL a different kind of collector interest from ordinary state prefixes. It is not a modern special-series campaign and it is not just an old Sabah code; it sits inside Labuan's administrative movement from Straits Settlements to North Borneo/Sabah and then to Federal Territory status.

EL is a legacy Labuan identifier. Its meaning comes from place and administrative history rather than from a launch event, charity campaign or vanity-market story.

Labuan adds a separate administrative layer. Europlate notes that L was issued to Labuan from the Straits Settlements period, continued after Labuan became part of British North Borneo, and was later supplanted by EL when the island entered the Malaysia-era East Malaysia system. That makes EL a bridge code: older than modern Federal Territory Labuan L plates, but newer than the pure colonial-era L format.
