ES

Series Overview

ES is the early Malaysia-era Sabah registration code associated with Sandakan.

Before the modern S-front Sabah structure, Sabah carried forward older district letters by placing E in front of them. S had identified Sandakan in the older North Borneo district system, so ES became the Sandakan code during this transitional period.

That gives ES a stronger history than its short two-letter shape first suggests. It is not a modern vanity prefix; it is Sandakan identity carried from the North Borneo district map into the early Malaysia registration arrangement.

Europlate collector notes specifically mention Sandakan examples with suffix-letter development after the plain ES block, including ESA-style forms. That makes the family broader than a single two-letter code: ES first, then ES plus suffix-letter progression where the old sequence required it.

ES belongs with Sabah's other early E-prefix codes such as EB for Beaufort, ED for Lahad Datu, EJ for Jesselton, EK for Kudat, ET for Tawau and EU for Keningau. Its appeal comes from Sandakan history, compact typography and the visible bridge between old district marks and later Sabah registration families.
