Series Overview
EV is the policy plate that changed how Malaysians read electric vehicles on the road.
JPJ launched the EV registration series on 9 September 2024, alongside the new JPJePlate physical plate design for electric vehicles.
The two ideas are related but not identical: EV 1 to EV 9999 is the registration-number series, while JPJePlate is the white, reflective, Euro-style physical plate with security features and an embedded RFID element.
Bidding for EV numbers opened on JPJeBid from 9 to 13 September 2024. EV 1 was not available for public bidding because it had already been reserved, and the public range otherwise ran through EV 9999.
Unlike a normal vanity release, EV is also a continuing registration direction. After EV 1 to EV 9999, the series is expected to move into EV suffixes such as EVA and EVB as Malaysia's electric-vehicle population grows.
The key rule is eligibility. EV numbers and the JPJePlate pilot are for fully electric vehicles, not petrol cars, diesels, hybrids or plug-in hybrids.
That makes EV more than a collector prefix. It is part number plate, part transport policy and part public signal: a car wearing EV registration and the new white-green plate is being identified as a zero-tailpipe-emission vehicle in a way enforcement officers, emergency responders and ordinary drivers can recognise quickly.
