A special series of only 999 numbers (IQ 1 – IQ 999) linked to the Sepang International Circuit. Originally, “IQ” plates were used on official vehicles for the Formula 1 International (Queensland) Circuit events (the abbreviation “I.Q.” was a legacy code). In August 2018, these plates were opened for public tender, perhaps to monetize remaining numbers. Bidding ran 8–28 Aug 2018, but many numbers remained unsold by early 2019. Eventually, JPJ made leftover IQ plates available via direct sale. The rationale: “IQ” can imply intelligence quotient, making combos like IQ 7 or IQ 300 appealing or humorous. However, demand was lukewarm compared to other series, given the small range. Today, IQ plates are a peculiar find – a mix of motorsport heritage and clever-letter vanity. A few luxury car owners adopted them for the novelty. With only 999 ever issued, IQ plates are undeniably rare, albeit one of the quieter special plate launches.
