Issued in the mid-1990s to coincide with the Modenas Kriss, Malaysia’s first home-grown moped (kapchai) introduced in 1996. The KRISS plates (1-9999) were offered to new Modenas Kriss owners as a patriotic touch. The Modenas Kriss became a bestseller, so thousands of these special plates hit the roads in the late ’90s. They were motorcycle-only registrations (not used on cars). Over time, many Kriss bikes have been retired or scrapped, and JPJ hasn’t reissued the prefix. Thus, active KRISS plates have dwindled, mostly seen on well-kept old bikes or with enthusiasts. The series holds nostalgic value as it marked a milestone in the national motorcycle industry. While not extremely scarce (up to 9999 were made), relatively few remain in use, making a KRISS plate a unique sighting today.
