Key Points

  • Old Kudat plates given an S suffix after 1963 (e.g. K 314 S).
  • The S separated Sabah's K from Kedah's and Kuching's K.
  • New Kudat registrations took the EK prefix instead.

Series Overview

K_S covers Kudat registrations from North Borneo that were given an S suffix after Sabah joined Malaysia in 1963. Kudat's letter was K, which was also Kedah's in Malaya and Kuching's in Sarawak, so once the three territories shared one country a plain K 314 could have come from any of them. Sabah's answer for existing plates was to add S, for Sabah, after the number: Europlate photographed this Kudat car as K 314 S.

The same suffix was applied to Sabah's other old district letters, such as T for Tawau, while new registrations took the E prefix instead (EK for Kudat). English Wikipedia notes that old numbers in these obsolete Sabah formats may still be retained on vehicles today.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does K 314 S end in S?

It is an old Kudat registration. After 1963, Sabah added S to existing plates so they could not be confused with Kedah or Kuching plates that also began with K.

Is K_S the same as Sarawak's K_Q?

No. K_S plates are from Kudat in Sabah, marked with S after 1963; K_Q plates are from Kuching in Sarawak, marked with Q between 1988 and 1991.
