A landmark special plate series “MALAYSIA” launched in conjunction with Merdeka (Independence Day) 2018 by the new Pakatan Harapan government. MALAYSIA 1-9999 were auctioned, and it set records – MALAYSIA 1 fetched RM1,111,111, the highest ever paid for a Malaysian plate at that time. The winning bidder was Aldi International (breaking the previous record “V1” at RM989k). The auction collected RM13.1 million total for the government. Notably, “MALAYSIA 2020” was reserved for then-PM Tun Mahathir Mohamad. This series, using the country’s name, was immensely popular – it was the first post-2018 election special plate and signified unity. All plates are standard transferable registrations now. “MALAYSIA” plates remain some of the most prestigious, given their patriotic weight and the eye-watering bids they drew. They will also stand as the high-water mark of Malaysia’s vanity plate craze in the late 2010s.
