One of Proton’s earliest special model plate series, introduced for the Proton Perdana (a D-segment sedan) in the mid-1990s. PERDANA 1-9999 were allocated to new Perdana buyers, government fleets and some corporate customers. As the Perdana became the de facto Malaysian government official car in the late ’90s, many ministerial vehicles bore “PERDANA” plates (often with matching low numbers). For example, PERDANA 1 was believed to be used on a government VIP vehicle. The series bolstered the prestige of owning a Perdana, aligning the name plate with the car’s role as a flagship model. After the first-generation Perdana, Proton discontinued issuing model-name plates for subsequent generations. By now, a number of PERDANA plates have been retired along with the cars (especially the older V6 models). Still, some are kept alive by enthusiasts who transfer the plates to newer vehicles (even non-Protons) for the novelty. The PERDANA series is emblematic of 1990s Proton pride, when having the national car’s name on your plate was a statement of support for domestic industry.
