A special plate series introduced for the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games. “RIMAU” – the name of the games’ tiger mascot – stands for “Respect, Integrity, Move, Attitude & Unity.” The Youth and Sports Ministry together with JPJ launched this series in late 2016. There were 2,017 numbers available (signifying the year 2017, stopping at RIMAU 2017). Bidding was via tender; many plates were bought by companies sponsoring the SEA Games and by sports personalities. Funds supported the Games’ organizing costs. RIMAU plates were popular. For example, RIMAU 1 through 10 saw competitive bids (RIMAU 1 rumored above RM150k). Each buyer received a certificate from the Minister. With precisely 2,017 issued, they are limited. Today, a RIMAU plate indicates the owner’s involvement in or support for the KL 2017 Games. These plates serve as mementos of Malaysia’s successful SEA Games, the tiger mascot immortalized on vehicle registrations.
