Series Overview

SL is a Labuan legacy format from the period before Labuan became a Federal Territory in 1984.

The code sits after the older EL period and before modern Federal Territory Labuan returned to the single-letter L family. In the Sabah-style system, S formed the front of the state registration identity, while L marked Labuan.

That makes SL different from a normal modern prefix. It is a historical Labuan/Sabah administrative marker, tied to the island's changing status rather than to a commemorative plate sale.

The plate is easiest to understand as one chapter in Labuan's shifting registration identity. L belongs to the older island code, EL reflects the early East Malaysia/Sabah period, SL reflects the later Sabah-style chapter, and modern L returns after Federal Territory status.

Its attraction is specificity: Labuan, pre-1984, short two-letter form and a one-to-four digit serial.
