Special plate series for Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM, National University of Malaysia) launched in 2015. Like other public university plates, UKM 1-9999 were sold to generate funds for the university’s research and development. Bidding was keen especially among UKM’s extensive alumni and staff community – as well as some patriotic folks since “UKM” is a well-known acronym. UKM 1 was likely reserved for a royal chancellor or the university itself, while other single-digits fetched high bids. Many UKM graduates proudly bought their graduation year or faculty numbers. The program was endorsed by the Transport Ministry as part of supporting higher education. Once auctions and direct sales concluded (circa 2016), remaining numbers were offered over-the-counter until exhausted. Now UKM plates are regularly seen around Bangi (where the campus is) and beyond, often on alumni-owned vehicles. They blend in as normal plates, but carry sentimental meaning. The UKM series demonstrated how Malaysians were willing to contribute to their universities for a memorable token in return – a trend mirrored by several other universities in that period.
