Special plate series for Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) introduced in 2017. UniMAP, an engineering-focused university in Perlis, joined the vanity plate program to fundraise for its development in Malaysia’s smallest state. UNIMAP 1-9999 were offered, and the Perlis Royal House took an active interest – UNIMAP 1 was reserved for the Raja of Perlis (Chancellor of UniMAP). Local corporations and alumni placed bids, though given Perlis’s size, the auction was quieter than in larger states. Still, iconic numbers found homes: UNIMAP 2001 (year established) went to a senior staff member, and UNIMAP 60 (Perlis’s Royal 60th Jubilee year) was secured by a state agency. The revenue helped build new labs and provide scholarships for engineering students. By early 2018, remaining unsold plates were few, and they were sold at JPJ Kangar on a first-come basis. Today, UniMAP plates are a rare sight even within Perlis – a handful adorn cars of university deans or local VIPs. They have high novelty outside Perlis; one appearing in KL would certainly pique curiosity. The UNIMAP series underscores the inclusive nature of the 2015–2018 university plate initiative: even Malaysia’s tiniest state university got its turn, making its mark on vehicles and supporting its mission through this unique means.
