A special series for Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) introduced in 2016. UNIMAS, in East Malaysia, got approval to run UNIMAS 1-9999 plates as part of the nationwide university plate effort. This series had strong support from Sarawak’s state government and local industry, as UNIMAS is a key educational institution in the state. Bidding events were even held in Kuching to allow local participation. UNIMAS 1 was presented to the TYT Governor of Sarawak as a gesture, while UNIMAS 25 (25th anniversary in 2017) was snapped up by an alumnus group. Funds bolstered UNIMAS’s research centers and student scholarships, particularly in fields like biodiversity and indigenous studies. The unique “UNIMAS” prefix – being the full university name – is lengthy, making the plate highly recognizable. By 2018, the program concluded and unsold numbers (if any) were minimal. On Sarawakian roads, UNIMAS plates are spotted on alumni vehicles and even on some government SUVs. They foster a sense of pride in Sarawak’s own university. This series is notable for demonstrating regional vanity plate appetite – proving that even across the South China Sea, the special plate fever was alive and well, binding communities to their institutions.
