A special plate series for Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) introduced in 2016 as part of the public university plate initiative. UPM (formerly University of Agriculture) engaged its alumni network and corporate partners to bid for UPM 1-9999. Funds raised were channeled to scholarships, campus facilities, and R&D. The bidding was reported to be competitive; UPM’s status as a top research university meant many alumni were in positions to support. UPM 1931 (the year UPM’s precursor was founded) and UPM 1 were among the cherished numbers. Lower numbers often went to distinguished alumni or were retained by the university (e.g., UPM 1 possibly for the VC or a ceremonial car). By 2017, UPM announced the plate program had met its targets. Now UPM plates appear mainly in Serdang and Putrajaya areas – typically on faculty members’ cars or alumni vehicles. They serve as mobile promotions for the university. With 9999 plates issued, UPM’s series was sizable; however, given the university’s large community, they remain special to those who understand the connection. It’s a lasting representation of UPM’s motto Berilmu Berbakti (With Knowledge We Serve) on the road.
