A special series launched by Pahang state in late 2016 for its 2017 tourism campaign “Visit Pahang 2017.” The prefix “VIP” – normally meaning Very Important Person – cleverly doubled as the campaign acronym, making it highly marketable. Naturally, demand was extreme: not only Pahang locals, but people nationwide wanted a “VIP” plate. Beauty entrepreneur Dato’ Seri Vida famously bid for VIP 1 and VIP 6 for her supercars. It’s reported VIP 1 exceeded RM300k, and many single/double-digits easily crossed into six figures. The series run was 1-9999, managed via JPJ eBid. Even numbers like VIP 8055 (“VIP BOSS”) saw heavy bidding. By early 2017, the state announced the series as a major financial success, channeling the revenue into tourism projects. While ostensibly tied to Pahang, any Malaysian could use a VIP plate, and plenty do – from luxury car owners to businesses wanting to signal prestige. All 9999 were sold (or reserved), and no further “VIP” series will occur, making these the only Malaysian plates literally spelling “VIP.” They remain one of the most recognized vanity plates in the country.
