Series Overview

Z marks the vehicles of the Malaysian Armed Forces. The letter is not used in any civilian state sequence, so a Z plate is always military. It is followed by a branch letter and a number, in white on black, with no leading zeroes and without the letters I and O.

The branch letters are ZA to ZD for the Army, ZL for the Royal Malaysian Navy (Laut, sea), ZU for the Royal Malaysian Air Force (Udara, air) and ZZ for the Ministry of Defence; military trailers use T/Z. Before independence, military vehicles in Malaya carried British-style numbers such as 05 ZF 45, and the current Z format dates from 1957. At first all military vehicles shared it; the separate Navy, Air Force and Ministry of Defence codes came later. Z 1 is the car of the Chief of Defence Force, and other plain Z numbers go to senior staff officers, lower numbers for higher rank; the defence blog Senang Diri notes that the service chiefs use ZD 1, ZL 1 and ZU 1.
