K_Q

Series Overview

K_Q covers the old Sarawak Kuching registrations that used K with Q as a suffix.

Before the 1991 Q-front reform, Sarawak used older regional letters such as K, B, S, M and L. K identified Kuching. When those older Sarawak letters risked being confused with similar-looking formats elsewhere, Q could appear after the serial as a Sarawak identifier.

That makes K...Q different from Kedah's ordinary K series and different from modern Sarawak QK or QA plates. The K carries the old Kuching identity, the serial carries the registration sequence, and the final Q places the plate inside Sarawak's transition toward the modern Q system.

Europlate's Sarawak notes explain the wider suffix-Q problem: old Sarawak letters overlapped with Peninsular, Sabah and Singapore-style codes, so Q was added around the 1991 transition before the logic was flipped and Q moved to the front.

K_Q has strong legacy appeal because Kuching later became one of the main identities in the Q-front era. It preserves the older version of that story: Kuching before QK and QA became the familiar modern forms.
