A special Kedah plate series honoring the late Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah of Kedah, who uniquely served twice as Malaysia’s King (Yang di-Pertuan Agong). Launched in 2017, the “SMS” prefix corresponds to the Sultan’s name/initials. Only 1-999 were available, making it exclusive. The series was officially introduced a couple of months before June 2017, and by late June it was reported as the latest special plate. It was administered by Yayasan Sultanah Bahiyah (the royal foundation) and marketed by a private entity. Proceeds went to the foundation’s charitable causes (benefiting needy citizens, especially the elderly and children). Given Kedah’s smaller population, bidding was modest but steady – wealthy royalists and some businesses acquired numbers. (SMS could also cheekily imply “Short Message Service,” but here it’s all about the Sultan.) The plate run stopped at 999, and any unsold after auctions could be bought via JPJ counters. Today, an “SMS” plate is a rare find outside Kedah. It stands as both a tribute to a beloved Sultan and a successful charity plate, raising several million ringgit for good causes.
