A special series for Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) introduced in 2015. UiTM, having one of the largest alumni bases in Malaysia, offered UITM 1-9999 to raise funds for educational needs and to foster alumni spirit. Bidding was vigorous – UiTM’s extensive network of former students and staff meant many wanted a piece of their alma mater. UITM 1956 (year of founding as RIDA Training Centre) and UITM 1 were notable plates, the latter possibly retained for the Vice-Chancellor’s official car. Mid-range numbers like UITM 2020 (a vision year) also saw interest. The series was part of Transport Minister’s green-light for university plates to be sold at a “special price” to support academia. By 2016, the UITM plate program had successfully injected funds into campus upgrades and student aid. UiTM plates, often seen on alumni-owned businesses’ vehicles, carry a sense of pride for Malay/Bumiputera graduates (as UiTM is Malaysia’s largest public university for Bumiputeras). They are readily transferable and have occasionally changed hands on the open market, though most remain with the original owners. The UITM series stands as a significant example of a community rallying to support its institution – every plate a small contribution to the university’s legacy.
