Special plate series for Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), launched in 2017. As one of the newer public universities (est. 2006), UMK saw this as both a branding and fundraising opportunity. UMK 1-9999 went on sale with the support of Kelantan’s royal patronage. The Kelantan palace reportedly secured UMK 1 and other single-digits for official use, given the Sultan’s role in the university’s leadership. Local Kelantanese, known for their strong community bonds, participated actively – many entrepreneurs bought plates like UMK 77 (77 is significant in Kelantan culture for some) or their birth years. Funds from the plate sales were used to build entrepreneurship incubators and provide student aid, aligning with UMK’s focus on entrepreneurship education. By early 2018, most prime numbers were taken, though the overall response was slightly more modest compared to older universities (due to UMK’s relatively young alumni base). Today, UMK plates are mostly found in Kelantan, on vehicles of staff, alumni or education department officials. They serve as rolling billboards for UMK’s presence in a state proud of its heritage. The UMK series exemplifies the inclusivity of the vanity plate program – even a decade-old university in the northeast had its chance to shine and raise its profile nationwide.
