A vanity series for Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) released in 2016. UTHM, known for engineering and tech programs in Johor, joined the special plate bandwagon slightly later than bigger universities. UTHM 1-9999 were made available. The launch saw support from Johor state officials (as UTHM is a Johor public university) and alumni. Funds went into improving campus infrastructure and student facilities. UTHM 1 was likely reserved for a VVIP (perhaps the Sultan or a top politician from Johor). Alumni picked numbers like UTHM 865 (for “UTHM” on a T9 keypad) or their graduation year. The series had a smaller target audience compared to UM/UKM, so not all numbers were immediately taken; JPJ counters continued selling leftovers for some time. Nonetheless, by 2018 the program concluded. Today, UTHM plates are relatively rare outside Johor. Within the state, one might see them on faculty cars or local supporters’ vehicles. They signify pride in UTHM’s contributions to technical education. This series, albeit one of the more modest ones, reflects the inclusive approach – even newer universities got a chance to shine on the road.
