The letter “X” series is a special vanity prefix periodically released by JPJ (mostly through Putrajaya) since around 2019. It is not tied to any state; instead, JPJ offers “X” plates in batches via eBid whenever the fancy plate schedule permits. For example, an initial batch was auctioned with X 1-X 9999, and later batches for remaining numbers followed. The “X” carries a certain mystery and is globally recognized (as a symbol for the unknown or a generation). Demand is high for single-letter series, and X is no exception. Plates like X 1, X 7, X 10 have drawn substantial bids. The novelty also lies in brevity – just one letter and digits – which many find aesthetically pleasing. The release strategy for X is ongoing: unlike a one-off, JPJ can reopen bidding for unreleased numbers, so while many X plates are already out, the series is technically not closed until all 1-9999 are exhausted. Each batch rekindles interest, with symmetric or lucky numbers being fought over. These plates transfer normally. Owning an “X” plate denotes one has participated in (and won) one of these exclusive JPJ auctions – adding a bit of X-factor to the vehicle, so to speak.
